Metrolinx partners with ONxpress to transform GO service

Brian, January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

New GO Expansion operator will mean more trains, less waiting and faster, more frequent service.

Metrolinx will soon have a new operations partner with a plan for faster and more frequent service to the region.

Metrolinx has accepted ONxpress’ proposal for the operations and maintenance of the GO Transit system beginning Jan. 1, 2025.

This will include operating and maintaining GO Trains, train service planning, introducing new operational technology solutions and providing maintenance services for new assets like electrification and signaling. ONxpress’ operations division ONxpress Operations Inc. (OOI), is made up of the European railway operator Deutsche Bahn International Operations and Aecon Concessions.

This is an important milestone for OnCorr. It’s the second and largest piece of the GO Expansion program. Being one of two proposals making up the development phase.

GO Expansion is underway

By 2041, the GO service area (which includes the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Region (GTHA), Kitchener-Waterloo, Barrie, and Niagara) is expected to grow to more than 12 million people.

With much of the transportation network already congested  and travel demand expected to increase by more than 50 per cent, there is a need for transit systems to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier.

Enter GO Expansion – the program that will bring more train service by delivering new transit infrastructure and operations that will reduce journey times and add more passenger capacity.

More track, more stations

The GO Expansion program is already transforming our region in ways greater than previously imagined.

With $11-billion of work currently underway to add more stations, more track, and enhance the customer experience across the network, customers are already benefiting from upgraded new and upgraded stations. Those include Agincourt, Bloomington, Cooksville, Kipling, Milliken, Old Elm, Rutherford and Unionville GO.
