Intro to my site Brian, November 29, 2023November 29, 2023 Hello all. My name is Brian and I started this website to discuss transit across Canada, but not just transit. I have decided to build a website that discusses transit growth, and planning in Canada as well as Transit Oriented Developments in some cities. There are many plans to build LRT lines, Subways, Skytrain extensions and more. Some cities are just looking to just improve bus service across the cities they serve. I want to discuss that and also discuss my ideas to help improve service in each area. The reason we have to discuss this, is because the population is going to grow a lot. Some cities have already discussed growth and are preparing for population increases by 50% of the current population in the next 20-25 years. Some areas like Toronto are very busy and have a lot of growth happening but a transit system struggling to keep up with the population boom, and a road network that is at or over capacity. Highways like the Gardner and the DVP cannot be widened to handle and increase of traffic, and the 401 is already 16 lanes running across the city, between the express and collectors lanes. The problem is with 16 lanes currently the highway is a parking lot more or less for several hours a day. That shows that it is not a localized problem with congestion it is a regional one, and we would need more regional transit running in both directions at all times of the day. That means there needs to be more GO train service on the main lines all day everyday, and more GO bus service feeding the trains, as well as local transit service increases to feed to the GO trains and buses. This problem is not just isolated to Toronto. It is also happening in Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton. It will extend to areas such as Winnipeg and Regina and Halifax over the years as well, unless local and provincial governments come together to build new transit and properly fund transit. Currently there are proposals in Ottawa to raise transit fares in 2024 and cancel some routes completely and also to move routes off of certain roads to streamline the existing service to try to make the system work better. The argument there is ridership has not rebounded since Covid, and that ridership has not gotten back to 2019 levels. But there are other explanations as to what has happened in Ottawa since then. But that will be in an article on this website at a later date. There will be conversations on this site about the growth and changes in many cities, and where employment areas are and new residential neighbourhoods being built. We will look at neighbourhoods that have been built, population of those areas and the nearest transit routes to those areas. We can look at what impacts that has on future transit growth, and how cities can be built based on the new transit services that get built. Examples would be the Hamilton LRT service that will built in the next few years. What can Hamilton do in those areas to create jobs and new rentals? Things like that will be discussed on this website. I will also have comments available on posts so we can have friendly discussions on this site. There will be no comments approved that are disrespectful and talk about politicians in negative ways. I know everyone has an opinion of who should be in charge but this is all about who can build transit and what can be done to accomplish that. Enjoy my site Related National
